Europe the ‘next frontier’ in US college football recruiting

Europe has become a pipeline of Division I recruits and increasingly for schools from the Power Five conferences. Recruits from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Serbia and Ireland signed this week with programs including Washington, TCU, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Boston College.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Since Neal Brown and his coaching staff have arrived at WVU, one European player has signed with the Mountaineers and two more have verbally committed to the Class of 2021. So exactly how do European players that don’t have a traditional high school football system catch the eye of top level college coaches? That’s where “The Ambassador” Brandon Collier comes in.

At 6'8" and 325 pounds, offensive lineman Ilija Krajnovic has a future waiting in college football and a dream of the NFL—without ever having played a game in the United States.

He is all alone in Room 225 at Ascender Hall East. It is a Friday afternoon in the middle of June. Dinnertime nears. His workouts for the day are done, and his nightly routine will soon commence. Ilija Krajnovic is both thankful for an opportunity that will change his life and homesick in a way he can't quite put into words.
